How to Start Selling Digital Products as a Beginner (Even If You Have No Idea Where to Start)
Mar 07, 2025
A few years ago, I had no clue that I could make money online selling digital products. I thought you had to be some kind of tech genius or have a huge following. But guess what? You don’t!
Selling digital products is one of the best ways to make passive income, and the best part? You create something once and sell it over and over again. If you're new to this, don't worry—I’m breaking everything down step by step so you can start making money ASAP.
What Are Digital Products?
Digital products are things you create and sell online without ever touching inventory. These could be:
✅ Ebooks
✅ Templates (Canva, social media, planners, etc.)
✅ Online courses or workshops
✅ Printables (budget trackers, to-do lists, journals)
✅ Stock photos or design assets
Basically, if it can be downloaded and used digitally, it’s a digital product!
Why Sell Digital Products?
- No shipping hassles – Everything is delivered instantly online.
- Low startup costs – You don’t need a warehouse or inventory.
- Passive income potential – Sell the same product over and over.
- Work from anywhere – Your business is 100% online!
I started by selling an ebook, and at first, I thought, Who’s going to buy this? But once I marketed it the right way, sales started rolling in! And you can do the same.
How to Get Started Selling Digital Products
1. Find a Profitable Idea
Your product should solve a problem or make someone’s life easier. Ask yourself:
💡 What skills or knowledge do I have?
💡 What do people always ask me for help with?
💡 What’s something I’ve figured out that others struggle with?
For example, if you're great at organization, create a planner template. If you know social media marketing, sell a content calendar.
2. Create Your Product
You don’t need fancy tools. Here are some free or low-cost platforms to create your product:
📝 Ebooks – Canva, Google Docs
🎨 Templates – Canva
🎥 Courses/Workshops – Loom, Teachable, or Gumroad
📄 Printables – Canva, Adobe Illustrator
Start simple. Your first product doesn’t need to be perfect—it just needs to be useful.
3. Set Up a Shop to Sell
You’ll need a place where people can buy your product. Here are some great platforms:
💻 Gumroad – Super beginner-friendly!
💻 Etsy – Great for printables and templates.
💻 Shopify – If you want a full online store.
💻 Payhip – A solid option for digital downloads.
Upload your product, write a killer description, and set a price!
4. Market Your Digital Product Like a Pro
This is where most people get stuck—they create a product but don’t know how to sell it. Here’s what works:
📌 Social Media – Share behind-the-scenes, customer reviews, and benefits of your product.
📧 Email List – Offer a freebie in exchange for an email, then introduce them to your paid product.
🎯 Pinterest – Create eye-catching pins that lead to your product page.
🤝 Collaborate – Partner with influencers or bloggers in your niche to spread the word.
